Many mancala games and closely related games ("mancala-like games") are researched in Combinatorial Game Theory (CGT).

Several games have been solved, as awari, a close variant of oware (see Awari Oracle), MiniMancala or kalah (not 2x6/6).

Recreational mathematicians and ethnomathematicians also study mancala games.
